New Project: AI as a Manager

How does AI impact the work environment and employees’ rights when used for managerial purposes? To better understand the ethical and legal challenges posed by AI, we are compiling current knowledge in the field.

The use of artificial intelligence in the workplace is rapidly increasing, with AI playing an ever-growing role in recruitment, workforce management, and monitoring. This raises important questions about employees’ rights, privacy, and well-being.

AI is Transforming the Workplace

AI and algorithms are now being used to manage the workforce in ways that previously required human decision-makers. From automated recruitment processes to scheduling, monitoring, and employee evaluations, technology can streamline workflows but also introduces risks such as privacy violations, discrimination, and increased work intensity.

Robert Ljung, analyst at the agency, is heading the project and emphasizes that the rapid development of AI and its applications makes this initiative particularly relevant:

Technology has advanced quickly, but regulations and ethical considerations have not always kept pace. We are already seeing how AI influences hiring decisions, working conditions, and the work environment without clear guidelines on accountability and legal security.

A Clearer Understanding of Risks and Opportunities

The systematic literature review will examine current research and legislation to identify both the risks and opportunities associated with AI use in the workplace. A key aspect of the project is to assess whether existing regulations are adequately adapted to the fast-paced technological development and whether new guidelines or legal amendments are needed.

We want to provide a fact-based foundation that can support future workplace decisions. By compiling this knowledge, we can strengthen the understanding of the issues that need to be addressed to create a safe and sustainable work environment, says Robert Ljung.

Research Team from Valencia

To compile the knowledge, we have engaged expert Adrián Todolí Signes from the University of Valencia, who is leading the research team. Adrián is a professor of labor law with extensive experience in the field.

The results of the project will be presented in a two-part systematic literature review in the spring of 2026..
