Guidelines for Visual Ergonomics- Lighting and visual conditions in the workplace

We are launching an English version of Guidelines for Synergonomy – Lighting and Visual Conditions.

The guidelines contain, for example, a brief introduction to the facts, the workplace´s visual environment, a part about planning of lightning and visual ergonomics in new construction, remodelling and additions and visual ergonomics in the systematic work environment work.

Applicable in the practical day-to-day operation

Our guidelines are evidence-based practice for occupational healthcare services. It can also be used by other key actors in working life, such as supervisors, safety representatives and union representatives, in support of employer’s preventive, remedial and follow-up work. The Agency’s goal is to formulate guidelines that are based on the best available evidence and offer a high level of applicability in the practical day-to-day operations of, for example, occupational healthcare services. The Agency’s efforts to create evidence-based guidelines are made in collaboration with researchers, practitioners, working professionals, and relevant industry organisations.

Updates in the English version

Since the guidelines were published in Swedish in 2021, this English version also includes some updates to ensure that the English version is up to date. For example, references to standards and regulations are updated since new versions are available. Among the updates:

  • Clarified and simplified the information regarding luminance ratios.
  • Clarified information regarding the handling of the Screenmaster.
  • Clarifications and additions in the box regarding considerations when procuring and purchasing display screens.
  • New updated references reflecting the globally increased prevalence of eye-neck/shoulder disorders and pain.
  • A new subsection clarifying that visual ergonomics has a real impact on productivity in typical office work.
  • New updated references regarding the connection between visual ergonomics, office work, and productivity.

References to laws that apply in Sweden

Note that several sections in the English version include references to Swedish academic literature and supporting materials available in Swedish. Readers should find out which rules apply and what kinds of similar support materials are available in their own context, to ensure legal compliance and adherence to best practices.

We establish and develop guidelines

As a part of The Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise aim to contribute to a healthy, joyful and sustainable working life, the Swedish agency for Work Environment Expertise establishes and develops guidelines. The purpose of translating our Swedish guideline is to make the guidelines accessible to people working to create good visual and lighting conditions in workplaces in Europe. The English version is also in demand in Sweden, including by universities that use the guidelines in their teaching in English.
