How people in Sweden view the work environment – new survey 2026

How do people in working life really view the work environment – and how well do they understand what it actually is?

In 2026, the Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise will conduct a new national survey aimed at deepening the knowledge about the attitudes and understanding of work environment issues among people working in Sweden. The results will be presented in the report Sweden on Work Environment 2026, which will be published next year.

The purpose of the survey is to provide a broader picture of how people value the importance of the work environment, what knowledge exists, how strong the engagement is in work environment issues, and how we access information about the work environment.

With this upcoming survey, the agency aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how people today perceive the work environment and how important these issues are considered in different parts of working life.

– By deepening our understanding of how people perceive and interpret work environment issues, we can develop our work to disseminate knowledge in a way that makes the greatest difference, says Johan Stenmark, lead process analyst at the Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise.

Builds on previous results

The new survey builds on the results from the 2024 study. Those results showed that engagement in work environment issues was high, but knowledge was limited. Eight out of ten Swedes were interested in work environment issues, but just over half did not know what systematic work environment management means, and one in four had never heard of the Work Environment Act. At the same time, many expressed a desire to learn more: 57 percent wanted to deepen their knowledge of the Act and 54 percent of systematic work environment management.

One in three had considered changing workplaces during the past year due to their work environment. Views on salary versus work environment differed among Swedes – a quarter believed that the work environment outweighs salary and benefits, while six out of ten felt that both are equally important.
